Getting back to the basics of composite materials the secret to reliable repairs is following some fundamental principals. The repair process requires the removal of all damaged laminate and the replacement of the layers following the general orientations of the original frame. A proper repair is achieved when these new layers are scarfed into the existing frame. Creating a layered connection. In the manufacturing process an internal pressure source was used in the repair we have no access to the inside of the tubes so we deploy an external pressure process using silicone molds, this process can apply significant even pressure to the curing repair using a direct heat that drops the viscosity of the resin for a superior void and wrinkle free repair laminate. This process is far superior to vacuum bag lamination which is prone to wrinkling used by many other repair companies.

Carbon fiber composites are a combination of materials the primary ones being the carbon fibers themselves and the epoxy resin that binds them together. In most cases these components are assembled as multiple plies
of carbon fabric most of which are unidirectional, all the layers in a single
ply being in one direction only. Each layer is stacked into a two part hollow mold on top of the others in sequence known as lay up. Once all the layers have been applied the most common technique is to assemble the two
part mold with a bladder inside. This is used during the cure to apply pressure using compressed air to the laminate with a force that will ensure proper consolidation of the layers. The properties of the composite
produced is highly dependent on achieving the proper fiber compaction. Maximizing the density of the carbon relative to the resin.
Many plies in parallel will result in a very stiff part, but by varying the angles of the layers such as +/-45 or +/- 60 that will effect the properties of the component to allow flex to be designed into the frame an important part of making a frame rideable.
The beauty of composites rest on the anisotropic properties of the material
which the primary mechanical properties are in one direction parallel to the fiber direction. Metals are considered isotropic, properties are equal in all directions.
What happens when there is a failure. When the stress being applied to a component exceeds the design properties it is the resin that fails first destroying this support.
With this support failing a cascade effect results as the dissipated energy spreads away from the impact site resulting in delamination and individual fibers braking continuing until all the energy has been absorbed. At this
stage there are still many fibers still connected and unbroken and the inherent stiffness of the material results in all the fibers trying to return to their original position. This effectively makes minor impacts not very noticeable.
If left unattended it is possible for these unnoticed failures to cause a more catastrophic failure in the future.
